Cut and sustain — designing within one bar

Theory

Yesterday you saw staccato and legato separately. Today you mix them within one bar — cutting some notes short, sustaining others long, to give the rhythm dynamics and breath.

This is really the start of "expression." Even the same notes lined up begin to speak the moment you design where to cut and where to sustain. A short staccato is a tightening "tuck"; a long legato is a breathing "space." Alternate them and a stiff rhythm gains a natural, speech-like inflection. When people talk, some words are clipped short, others drawn out — music is the same.

Today's examples mix staccato and legato. But there's no right answer. Even for the same rhythm, "which notes to cut and which to sustain" is yours to design. Take the examples as a skeleton, vary the lengths, and pick by ear which combination sounds the most "funky."

Changing lengths within one bar can confuse the hand. Especially the switch from sustaining legato to suddenly cutting staccato is hard. Of course. Today, even if imperfect, just grabbing the feel of "I choose the length" is big progress. Experiencing for the first time that the notes stay the same yet the tune's expression changes with length alone makes rhythm far more fun. From today, you're not just a player but an arranger designing the rhythm yourself.

Today's practice

0–10 min · Warm-up BPM 60–70. Alternate short and long notes to warm up the switch. Focus on legato→staccato.

10–20 min · Brain training (today's target = designing length) Sing mixed lengths: "daaa dat! daaa dat!" Design in advance where to cut and sustain.

20–40 min · Real groove (Examples 1·2 / BPM 72) Repeat Example 1 (cut and sustain) 4× at BPM 72 → then Example 2 (designing length). Once easy, change lengths into your own inflection.

40–50 min · Record & reflect (recommended) Record and check: are short and long clearly distinct / is the inflection natural / is the switch smooth?

Done when: you can mix staccato and legato within one bar to give the rhythm inflection through note length.

  • All the same length. No cut/sustain difference is flat. Short clearly short, long clearly long.
  • Fumbling on the switch. Legato→staccato is hard. Decide the cut point in advance.
  • Cutting too finely. All staccato is stiff. You need legato space to breathe.
  • Right-answer anxiety. There's no right answer in length design. Enjoy combinations and pick by ear.
